Shane Briel – Promania update

Stallions Freshwater angling club had its first promania and club competition at Jackie Leonard Vaal dam on the 12th January 2019. The day started out rough and we started an hour late due to vehicles getting stuck in the mud on the way to the water’s edge.

On the drawing of pegs my visitor drew for us and he drew peg 62 so I got peg 61, on arrival at my peg I saw that it was located around the bay to the left in the rocks. Looking at the water I could see the fish turning at 40M and at 90m, I decided to clip in at 45M with my left rod and my right rod at 80M, my approach was a 50/50 mix of Twin Series competition feed and Gold Medal feed.

On my right rod I had a Bunspice Floatie with swd on the top hook and swd on the bottom hook on the bal I put some Peanut Power, GP and FX, this went in as the hooter blew. My short rod was loaded first with 6 bomb feeders and got them in as quick as possible. The combo on the left
rod; top hook Legend floatie, with swd and bottom hook was swd on the bol and Hasbeen, ‘Bas’ van Besie and Chakalaka. Within 10 minutes I got my first fish on the left rod, keeping the same combo, I fished that distance the whole day with a bite tempo of between 10 and 15 minutes only changing to a plain yellow float near the end of the day.

The right rod did not produce in an hour so I decided to bring it to 55M and only used swd rolled along the hook, as to mimic a worm. I forgotten my worms at home and had to improvise. I dipped the bottom half of the swd in Leon’s Skotland with a small stripe of Leon’s Skotland on the bol this produced my first small barber after 15 minutes. I kept this combo going, it produced some fish however, when the bite time passed 30 minutes I added some ‘Bas’ Van Bessie and the bite time would drop to around 15 minutes.

I lost some nice fish during the day, dew to hook pulls. Total fish for the day 28 for 9.635KG giving me a second in my zone and a 10th overall in the promania out of 35 promania anglers. I was awarded the 1st in the masters section of our club competition out of 54 club members.
